When I get into arguments with christians that lead to god existing or not, they always seem to say "but without god, what meaning does life have?"

I find that sad. I don't need some god, or deity for life to have meaning. I make my own meaning.

Not to mention, why does life even HAVE to have meaning? Maybe it doesn't. Maybe the meaning of life is whatever you make it. Maybe there is no greater meaning, and it's a completely personal thing?

No... But you definitely need God in order to have your Death, have meaning.

And I think that your Life's meaning, will perpetually be shallow/hollow on average. But I could be wrong about that.
